UEFA UNION EUROPEAN FOOTBALL ASSOCIATION: Fourteen teams have qualified for the World Cup Finals. Germany got the first spot as the tournament host. Qualifying through the group phase were Croatia, England, France, Italy, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Serbia-Montenegro, Sweden and Ukraine. The Czech Republic, Spain and Switzerland advanced through a playoff round to take the final three spots.

CONMEBOL CONFEDERACION SUDAMERICANA DE FUTBOL: After a ten-team home-and-home series, Brazil, Argentina, Ecuador and Paraguay earned automatic berths in the World Cup finals. The fifth place club, Uruguay, was forced to play Oceania champion Australia in a home-and-home series, and failed to advacne.

Oceania OCEANIA FOOTBALL CONFEDERATION: No team was guaranteed a World Cup berth. Australia beat the Solomon Islands in the final series to earn the right to face CONMEBOL's fifth-place team, Uruguay, in a home-and-home series for a World Cup berth. Australia advanced to the Finals on penalty kicks.

CONCACAF CONFEDERATION OF NORTH, CENTRAL AMERICAN AND CARRIBEAN ASSOCIATION FOOTBALL: Following a preliminary round, twelve teams played round-robins in three groups. The top two teams from each group advanced to stage three, a six-team round-robin with Mexico, the United States and Costa Rica advancing to the World Cup Finals. The fourth-place finisher, Trinidad and Tobago, won a home-and-home playoff against Asian qualifier Bahrain to claim a fourth World Cup berth.

AFC ASIAN FOOTBALL CONFEDERATION: Thirty-two teams opened the first stage in eight round-robin groups. The eight winners advanced to the second stage of qualifying, which consisted of two groups of four playing a round-robin. The top two teams in each group, Japan, Saudi Arabia, Iran and the Korea Republic, are going to the World Cup Finals. The two third-place teams met in a home-and-home playoff with Bahrain advancing to face Trinidad and Tobago from CONCACAF in a home-and-home series to determine another World Cup berth. Bahrain failed to advance.

CAF CONFEDERATION AFRICAINE DE FOOTBALL: Originally, there were 30 teams playing in five qualifying groups of six. After a brief suspension from FIFA, Kenya was allowed to take part in qualifying. The five group winners, Togo, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Angola and Tunisia, advanced to the World Cup Finals.
