The expansion Montreal Impact began building the core of their very first roster in the MLS Expansion Draft. The 18 existing MLS franchise were able to protect 11 players apiece, excluding home-grown players and players still developing through the Generation Adidas project, a joint-venture between the MLS and U.S. Soccer. The Impact selected 10 position players from the pool of unprotected players.
