BRIDGEVIEW, Ill. -- Alex scored the tiebreaking goal in the 86th minute, Sean Johnson made four saves, and the Chicago Fire beat the New England Revolution 3-2 on Saturday night.

Three minutes after entering the game, Alex corralled a clearing pass and knocked a left-footed low shot off Revolution goalkeeper Bobby Shuttleworth from 24 yards out for his first goal of the season.

Juan Luis Anangono and Mike Magee also scored for Chicago (11-11-6), which pulled into a tie with Philadelphia for fifth place in the Eastern Conference with 39 points -- two points ahead of seventh-place New England.

Kelyn Rowe and Sare Sene twice gave the Revolution (10-11-7) leads, but the Fire tied the score both times -- the last on Magee's goal in the 55th.

Magee took a short pass from Pagrick Nyarko and beat Shuttleworth from close range for his 16th goal of the season -- 10th since his trade from Los Angeles. The Revolution complained that Anangono was offside, forgetting that one New England defenceman was deep on the left side, making the play legal.

The Revolution opened the scoring with Rowe's goal in the ninth minute, a 25-yard chip shot that eluded Johnson.

Chicago tied it on Anangono's first goal since his arrival from Argentina on July 23 as he converted Magee's pass in the 30th.

The Revolution took a 2-1 lead in the first minute of first-half stoppage time, as Sene drove a low shot past Johnson from the left side of the penalty area.
