TORONTO - Toronto FC has lost U.S international midfielder Maurice Edu to Scotland's Glasgow Rangers.

The US$5-million transfer from the MLS side is subject to a work permit being granted but the 22-year-old has agreed to a five-year deal, the Scottish team said.

A spokesman for Toronto FC said Monday the deal had not yet been approved by MLS but a source in Toronto indicated that the move was happening. Rangers trumpeted the news on its website Monday.

Edu was the MLS's 2007 young player of the year while with Toronto. Edu has played in 38 games for Toronto, scoring five goals.

The six-foot midfielder, who has made six international appearances for the U.S. senior side, watched Rangers beat Hearts 2-0 on Saturday before returning to the U.S. ahead of Wednesday's World Cup qualifier in Guatemala.

The move has forced Electronic Arts to rejig the North American cover for its made-in-Canada FIFA 09 video game. A FIFA spokesman in Burnaby, B.C., said Edu will now be featured in a U.S. jersey rather than his Toronto FC sweater.
