SWANSEA -- Swansea needed a late own goal by defender Seb Hines to beat second-tier club Middlesbrough 1-0 on Wednesday and advance to the League Cup semifinals.

The ball struck Hines from a corner and flew past goalkeeper Jason Steele in the 81st minute at Liberty Stadium, sending Swansea through to only a third semifinal in topflight cup competitions in its 100-year history.

Swansea manager Michael Laudrup says "it wasn't a brilliant game to watch for the neutral but it was a tight cup game."

Swansea join Bradford and Aston Villa in the final four. The final quarterfinal is between Chelsea and Leeds next week.

Boro boss Tony Mowbray says "it was a tough game, fine margins. We gave a decent account of ourselves. It was a game we could have won."
