BARCELONA, Spain -- Barcelona's team doctor says Carles Puyol will be sidelined from anywhere between six weeks to three months after having arthroscopic surgery on his right knee for the second time in 11 months.

Ramon Cugat said Saturday that "Puyol will mark his own return. It could be a month and a half, two or three months."

Puyol had arthroscopic surgery on the same knee last May, ruling him out of Spain's European championship defence.

Cugat said that the 34-year-old team captain had damaged cartilage in his knee, but that this second procedure was not as invasive as the one last year.

Puyol will miss Barcelona's Champions League quarterfinal against Paris Saint-Germain next month and Spain's upcoming World Cup qualifiers.
