ROME -- Lionel Messi returned to form with two goals for Barcelona and fellow Argentina forward Gonzalo Higuain also scored a brace for Napoli as both teams secured key victories in the Champions League on Wednesday.

Samuel Eto'o scored for his fourth different team in Europe's top club competition on a night of standout individual performances. However, it was a night to forget for Schalke goalkeeper Timo Hildebrand, whose failed clearance led to Eto'o's opening goal in Chelsea's 3-0 win, which put Jose Mourinho's side atop Group E.

Barcelona reached the last 16 with a 3-1 win over AC Milan in Group H, which also features Ajax and Celtic.

Atletico Madrid advanced with a 4-0 victory over Austria Vienna in Group G.

Arsenal and Napoli both won to remain level atop Group F.
