The Dallas Stars acquired the rights to pending unrestricted free-agent goalie Ben Bishop from the Los Angeles Kings in exchange for a fourth-round pick in the 2017 NHL Draft on Tuesday.

The 30-year-old posted a 18-15-5 record with a 2.54 goals-against average and a .910 save percentage with a single shutout over 39 games split between the Tampa Bay Lightning and Kings in 2016-17.

The Bolts sent Bishop to the Kings in late February before the Trade Deadline.

"Ben has proven that he is one of the elite goaltenders in the NHL," said general manager Jim Nill in a press release. "This offers us the opportunity to negotiate with him before the free agency period begins."

According to TSN Hockey Insider Bob McKenzie, it is believed Bishop's preference was to be dealt to the Stars since he played his junior hockey in Texas.

Bishop, a two-time Vezina award finalist, played the final season of a two-year, $11.9 million contract this past season and will become an unrestricted free-agent on July 1 if not signed to a contract.

The draft pick headed to Los Angeles is guaranteed, even if Dallas can't sign Bishop.

The American holds a 148-80-25 record with a 2.32 GAA and a 0.919 SV with 19 shutouts over 270 career games with the St. Louis Blues, Ottawa Senators, Lightning and Kings. He's best known for helping lead Tampa to the Stanley Cup Final in 2015, losing to the Chicago Blackhawks in six games. Bishop posted a 13-11 record with a 2.18 GAA and a .921 SV with three shutouts over 25 contests during that playoff run.
