Stars still reign in NHL Power Rankings

The Dallas Stars continue to hold the top spot in the TSN.ca NHL Power Rankings, ahead of the Washington Capitals and St. Louis Blues.

The Dallas Stars continue to hold the top spot in the TSN.ca NHL Power Rankings, ahead of the Washington Capitals and St. Louis Blues.

Decisive victories have been the calling card of the Stars this season, as their past four wins have come by a combined margin of 15 goals.

The Minnesota Wild are up from nine to six and the Tampa Bay Lightning are up from 16 to 13. The Colorado Avalanche, going from 24 to 21, and Calgary Flames, from 26 to 23, are among the big movers up the board this week.

Falling the wrong way, the Montreal Canadiens crash from four to 10, and the Anaheim Ducks can't get out of their early-season funk and slide from 20 to 24.

When it comes to the remaining Canadian teams, the Ottawa Senators drop one to 14, while the Winnipeg Jets lose three spots to 18. The Edmonton Oilers are up one, to 22, the Toronto Maple Leafs are up two, to 25, and the Vancouver Canucks are down one, to 29.

The Stars aren't easy to catch for top spot, because they don't merely win, they blow teams out. They have outscored opponents 16-5 in three consecutive wins against teams in playoff position (Montreal, Minnesota and Chicago).

The Capitals remain hot on the trail of the Stars with six straight wins, and if there's an advantage to be had over Dallas, it could be in goal, where Braden Holtby and Philipp Grubauer have combined to give the Capitals a .939 save percentage in December.

The Blues have won four of five, with the only loss coming in Monday's 4-3 defeat against Philadelphia, when they gave up a three-goal lead. They could use more offence from the supporting cast, as Paul Stastny, Jori Lehtera and Troy Brouwer have each managed a single goal in 12 games this month.

Just when it looked like the Kings were in peak form, they drop four of five, with the only win coming in a game in which they surrendered 45 shots at Montreal. That ought to be enough to protect against overconfidence.
