Philadelphia’s phantastic rookie defenceman, San Jose’s blueline beast, Kopitar, Stempniak, Jones, fantasy and more in Scott Cullen’s Statistically Speaking.

HEROES

Shayne Gostisbehere – The Flyers rookie emerged from his biggest slump of the season, during which he had no goals and one assist in six games, to score two goals in a 4-2 win against Tampa Bay. Gostisbehere has 14 goals in 47 games. Since the 1990-1991 season, there is one defenceman to score more than 14 goals as a rookie (Dion Phaneuf, 20 in 2005-2006). And, a reminder, Gostisbehere has done this in 47 games!

Brent Burns – While we’re on goal-scoring defencemen, the San Jose blueliner put up a goal and an assist in a 2-1 overtime win at Calgary, giving him 15 points (6 G, 9 A) in the past 13 games. Burns leads all defencemen with a career-high 24 goals, and 282 shots on goal, this season.

Anze Kopitar – The Kings centre put up a goal and two assists in a 5-1 win over Vancouver. He has 38 points (11 G, 27 A) in the past 31 games.

Lee Stempniak – After scoring the overtime winner in a 5-4 Bruins victory at Florida, the veteran winger has put up six points (1 G, 5 A) in four games since he was acquired by the Bruins.

Martin Jones – San Jose’s 2-1 OT win at Calgary was on the back of Jones, who stopped 47 of 48 shots. He has a .945 save percentage in his past five starts, raising his save percentage to .919 on the season.

ZEROES

Roberto Luongo – Was pulled from the Florida net after allowing four goals on 16 shots in the first period of what was eventually a 5-4 overtime loss against Boston. He has a .888 save percentage in his past 10 games.

Cody McLeod, John Mitchell, Jack Skille – Colorado’s fourth line was hemmed into the defensive zone (2 for, 18 against, 10.0 SAT%) in a 3-1 win over Arizona.

Nick Ritchie – The Ducks winger was on the wrong end of the possession game (3 for, 18 against 14.3 SAT%) in a 2-1 shootout loss to Washington.

Jason Chimera and Tom Wilson – Washington wingers spent the night in their own end (1 for, 14 against, 6.7 SAT%) at Anaheim.

Aaron Ekblad and Dmitry Kulikov – The Panthers defence pairing was on the ice for three goals against (and none for) at even strength against Boston.

VITAL SIGNS

Oliver Ekman-Larsson – Arizona’s star defender left the loss to Colorado with an upper-body injury after running into Matt Duchene, then crashing into the boards.

Jonathan Huberdeau – Returned to the Panthers lineup after being out a couple of weeks due to an upper-body injury, and picked up a pair of assists in a 5-4 overtime loss to Boston.

Teddy Purcell – The Panthers winger missed the Boston game with a groin injury.

FIRSTS

Zach Hyman – Toronto’s 23-year-old rookie winger scored his first NHL goal, in his fifth NHL game, a 4-3 shootout loss to Buffalo.

FANTASY FOCUS

Are you still hanging on to these guys? Production fading from players owned in more than 80% of TSN leagues:

Erik Johnson – In the past 14 games, the Colorado blueliner has two goals and no assists; not enough to warrant a roster spot in most leagues. Owned: 87.7%
