Kessel finishing strong; Josi, Weber, Stastny, Parise and more in Scott Cullen’s Statistically Speaking.

HEROES

Nick Bonino and Phil Kessel – The Penguins duo each put up a goal and four assists in Saturday’s 7-2 rout at Detroit then Kessel added a goal and an assist in Sunday’s 3-2 overtime win at the Rangers. Bonino, playing a more significant role with Evgeni Malkin injured, has eight points (2 G, 6 A) in his past six games while Kessel has 14 points (4 G, 10 A) in the past 13 games.

Roman Josi and Shea Weber – Nashville’s top defence pair continues to produce. Josi put up three assists in Saturday’s 5-1 win over Columbus, and has 14 points (1 G, 13 A) in the past 15 games. Weber had a goal and an assist against the Blue Jackets, lifting him to 12 points (3 G, 9 A) in the past 12 games.

Paul Stastny – The Blues centre had a pair of assists in Friday’s 4-0 win vs. Vancouver then added two more assists in Saturday’s 4-0 win over Washington. He has 13 points (3 G, 10 A) in the past nine games.

Zach Parise – Buried a couple of goals in Minnesota’s 4-0 win at Colorado Saturday, giving him seven points (5 G, 2 A) in the past three games.

Mike Smith – He’s been new and improved since coming back from injury. After stopping 34 of 35 shots in Saturday’s 2-1 win against Philadelphia, Smith has a .965 save percentage in five starts.

ZEROES

Matt Calvert and Cam Atkinson – The Blue Jackets wingers were dominated (1 for, 21 against, 4.6 SAT%) and on for three goals against in Saturday’s 5-1 loss to Nashville. They struggled with Brandon Dubinsky (1 for, 11 against, 8.3 SAT%) and Boone Jenner (0 for, 10 against) skating at centre. 

Lauri Korpikoski, Mark Letestu, Iiro Pakarinen – The Oilers trio was pinned in the defensive zone (1 for, 12 against, 7.7 SAT%) in Saturday’s 6-4 loss at Los Angeles.

Mike Condon – Allowed five goals on 19 shots in Montreal’s 5-2 loss to the Rangers on Saturday. He has a .887 save percentage in his past nine starts.

Laurent Brossoit – The Oilers rookie netminder surrendered five goals on 32 shots in Saturday’s 6-4 loss at Los Angeles. He has a .844 save percentage in his past four starts.

Jimmy Howard – Gave up three goals on 14 shots in what was ultimately a 7-2 loss to Pittsburgh Saturday afternoon. In his past 15 games, he has a .884 save percentage.

VITAL SIGNS

John Carlson – Washington’s top defenceman returned to the lineup Friday, after missing a month with a lower-body injury, and scored the only goal in a 1-0 OT win at New Jersey.

Tyler Myers – The Jets defenceman is done for the season, requiring both hip and knee surgeries before next season.

Chris Kunitz – The Penguins winger suffered an upper-body injury after a collision Saturday with Red Wings C Pavel Datsyuk.

Olli Maatta – Pittsburgh’s defenceman is out for a while with a lower body injury. With Brian Dumoulin already sidelined, Pittsburgh’s defensive depth is going to be tested.

Michael Stone – The Arizona blueliner suffered a leg injury in Saturday’s 2-1 win against Philadelphia.

FIRSTS

Blake Pietila – A fifth-round pick of the Devils in 2011, the 23-year-old winger played his first three NHL games over the weekend. He had 16 points (9 G, 7 A) and was minus-15 in 54 AHL games.

SHORT SHIFTS

Hurricanes C Victor Rask scored a pair of goals in Sunday’s 3-2 win vs. New Jersey; he has four goals in the past three games…Rangers C Eric Staal scored both of their goals in Sunday’s 3-2 overtime loss to Pittsburgh. He had a goal and two assists in his first 13 games with the Blueshirts.
