Monahan and Giordano lead the Flames; Lehner, Kucherov, fantasy and more in Scott Cullen’s Statistically Speaking.

HEROES

Johnny Gaudreau, Sean Monahan and Jiri Hudler – Calgary’s top line dominated play in a 4-1 win over Carolina. Monahan led the way with a goal and three assists, a welcome performance after he managed three points (2 G, 1 A) in his previous 14 games.

Gaudreau contributed a goal and an assist, giving him 10 points (4 G, 6 A) in the past 10 games; his 49 points on the season has him tied for sixth in league scoring.

Hudler, who may be on the trade block, had a couple of assists, which gives him six points (1 G, 5 A) in the past seven games.

Mark Giordano – Calgary’s captain had a goal and an assist against Carolina, and has 21 points (6 G, 15 A) in the past 18 games.

Robin Lehner – The first half of the season was a washout for the Sabres goaltender after he was injured in the first game of the season, but he’s been on his game since returning to the lineup. Lehner stopped 33 of 35 shots in a 4-2 win at Montreal and has a .938 save percentage in six games this season.

Nikita Kucherov – The Tampa Bay sniper had a goal and an assist in a 3-1 win over Detroit, and has 30 points (15 G, 15 A) in the past 24 games.

ZEROES

Chris Terry, Jay McClement and Riley Nash – In a 4-1 loss at Calgary, Carolina’s fourth line got the wrong end of the possession game, on for 25% (5 for, 15 against) of even-strength shot attempts.

Eddie Lack – The Carolina goaltender had been playing better recently, posting a .931 save percentage in his previous 10 games, but allowed four goals on 24 shots in the loss at Calgary.

VITAL SIGNS

T.J. Brodie – The Flames blueliner suffered a lower-body injury after blocking a shot by Hurricanes defenceman Justin Faulk. It goes without saying that the loss of a 25-minute-per-game defenceman would be significant for Calgary.

SHORT SHIFTS

Flames D  Dougie Hamilton produced a goal and an assist vs. Carolina, giving him seven points (1 G, 6 A) in the past nine games…Sabres LW Johan Larsson scored a goal and had a dominant possession game (25 for, 6 against, 80.6 SAT%) at Montreal...Lightning G Ben Bishop turned away 24 of 25 shots in a 3-1 win against Detroit; he has a .932 save percentage in his past 23 games…Flames G Karri Ramo stopped 28 of 29 shots against Carolina, giving him a .925 save percentage in his past 18 games.

FANTASY FOCUS

Non-injured (or suspended) players that are being dropped the most in TSN leagues:

Tobias Rieder – The Coyotes winger has no goals and four assists in the past nine games, registering just six shots on goal in the past five games. Owned: 37.7%

Niklas Hjalmarsson – Were some lured in by Hjalmarsson’s two-point game in Buffalo a month ago? He plays a big role for the Blackhawks, but it doesn’t result in offensive production, as he has one assist in the past 10 games. Owned: 25.9%

Bo Horvat – Okay, not sure what’s happening here, unless Horvat is just on the roster bubble in most leagues. Vancouver’s second-year centre has 12 points (7 G, 5 A) in the past 11 games, is playing big minutes and doesn’t figure to see his role diminish going forward. Owned: 14.2%
