East Rutherford, NJ (Sports Network) - The New York Giants on Monday re- signed quarterback David Carr and terminated the contracts of running back Reuben Droughns, cornerback Sam Madison and safety Sammy Knight.
Carr, entering his eighth NFL season, threw just 12 passes last season as a backup to Eli Manning. He completed nine of those throws for 115 yards and a pair of touchdowns.
"We are excited about having David Carr back," Giants head coach Tom Coughlin said. "He did a very good job of preparing our defensive team this past year. David helped us prepare for the opponent's defensive scheme, whether it included a quarterback who was mobile or a drop-back game."
Droughns joined "Big Blue" on March 9, 2007 in a trade with Cleveland for Tim Carter and led the Super Bowl XLII champion Giants with six rushing TDs while amassing 275 rushing yards that season.
Madison played three seasons for New York after spending the first nine years of his career with the Miami Dolphins. In 2008 he played in seven games as a reserve defensive back and on special teams before suffering a broken ankle on December 28 in Minnesota. He has 38 career interceptions.
Knight joined the "G-Men" on March 4 of 2008 after spending time with the Saints, Dolphins, Chiefs and Jaguars. He played in nine games last year and finished the season with 13 tackles. For his career, Knight has tallied 42 picks.
In addition to the roster moves, the Giants also hired Al Holcomb to be their defensive quality control coach. Holcomb spent the previous three seasons as the defensive line coach at Lafayette.
