OHL: Rupert brothers lead Knights to 23rd straight win

Brothers Ryan and Matt Rupert each had a goal and an assist as the London Knights sank the host Plymouth Whalers 4-2 on Saturday in Ontario Hockey League action.

Ryan Rupert, a prospect of the Toronto Maple Leafs, extended his point streak to five games and has put up three goals and nine points in the process.

Matt Rupert now has 18 goals in 35 games, which is a career high and good for third in team scoring.

Max Domi and Brett Welychka scored a goal apiece for the Knights (31-5-2), who extended their win streak to 23 games, while Kyle Platzer picked up an assist and was a team-best plus-3 for the game.

Domi has three goals in his last two outings and 21 overall this season, which is four behind Seth Griffith for the team lead.

Griffith, who picked up an assist on Domi's goal, now has 25 goals and 60 points in 38 games, which leads London and is good for third in OHL scoring.

Zach Bratina and Tom Wilson scored for the Whalers (15-12-8), who have dropped back-to-back contests.

Jake Patterson stopped 31 shots, including a penalty shot in the final minute of the game, and improved his record to 13-1-1 on the season. Matt Mahalak turned aside 26 shots in defeat.

London went 0 for 3 on the power play while Plymouth failed to score on either of its opportunities with the man advantage.

Elsewhere in the OHL, it was: Belleville 3, Kitchener 2; Ottawa 6, Peterborough 3; Sault Ste. Marie 7, Niagara 3; Saginaw 7, Windsor 3 and Erie 6, Barrie 4.

At Plymouth, Mich., the Knights outshot the Whalers 12-8 in the opening 20 minutes, however neither club could score.

Wilson finally opened the scoring for Plymouth at 11:46 of the second period, but Matt Rupert responded only 20 seconds later to tie the game 1-1.

Domi and Ryan Rupert scored less than five minutes apart before the second period was through to give London a 3-1 lead after 40 minutes of play.

Wylechka added another goal for the Knights at 6:20 of the third period before Bratina added a late goal for the Whalers.

At Peterborough, Ont., Ryan Van Stralen scored twice and Clint Windsor stopped 48-of-51 shots as Ottawa (10-24-3) doubled up the Petes (9-24-4), who now sit last in the OHL standings.

Greyhounds 7 IceDogs 3

At Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., Dylan Staples scored twice while Nick Cousins and David Broll each had a goal and an assist as the Greyhounds (18-16-2) earned their fourth straight victory by crushing Niagara (21-14-2).

Spirit 8 Spitfires 3

At Saginaw, Mich., Garret Ross and Eric Locke each had two goals and an assist and Jimmy Lodge had a goal and three assists as the Spirit (15-17-5) defeated Windsor (14-17-6), which is winless in five games.

Otters 6 Colts 4

At Barrie, Ont., Connor Crisp and Connor Brown scored two goals apiece and Devin Williams made 39 saves as Erie (12-20-5) beat the Colts (24-10-1), who lost for the first time in four contests.
