For the third season in a row, a Canadian Major League Soccer team is on the clock to make the first selection at the MLS SuperDraft being held on Thursday at the Indiana Convention Center in Indianapolis.

Toronto FC, who finished last in league standings in 2012, will have its choice of a crop of promising young players as it holds the number-one pick.

In fact, the early part of the draft will have a very Canadian flavour as Toronto FC also owns the third pick overall.

Vancouver Whitecaps, who picked first overall in 2011, will make two top 10 selections, picking out of the fifth and 10th spots.

Montreal Impact, the team that made Duke University's Andrew Wenger the first pick of the 2012 MLS SuperDraft, will choose out of the eighth slot.

With no clear cut number one prospect on the board, there is a lot of debate raging about which name will be called to kick off the draft.

University of Louisville Cardinals defender Andrew Farrell is considered to be the top prospect available on the draft board. He is a physically imposing back-line presence who could shore up any team's defensive core.

Oakville, Ontario's Kyle Bekker, who plays midfield at Boston College, is also expected to be a very high selection in the 2013 draft. Considered to play more of a holding over attacking style of game, Bekker was a member of the Canadian Olympic Men's soccer team that participated in the 2012 CONCACAF qualifying tournament.

University of Connecticut midfielder Carlos Alvarez is another hot prospect, so much so that it is expected if he isn't taken with the first overall choice, the team sitting in the second position, Chivas USA will be making him their selection. The Los Angeles native brings a lot of different skills to the table including an ability to make great passes going forward to propel an offence.

Toronto FC's new president and general manager Kevin Payne could also choose to make a big splash in his first draft in charge of his new club and trade one or both picks in a package to acquire more seasoned players who could provide more immediate help to a struggling franchise.

Last year's top pick Wenger appeared in 23 games for the Impact, starting seven times, and scored four goals in his debut season.

Following the flurry of early Canadian action in the draft, only the Impact hold picks outside of the top 10. They have the 18th selection in the first round, as well as the 27th and 32nd picks, which are both in the second round.

Toronto FC also holds the first pick in the 2013 MLS Supplemental Draft.
