Team Canada started the World Junior Championship off in style on Friday with a dominant 8-1 win over the Czech Republic.

John Tavares had two goals and added an assist while Dustin Tokarski had a strong night in goal but the news was not all good. Forward Stefan Della Rovere left Friday night's game in the third period after suffering a shin injury.

Della Rovere had x-rays after the game which came back negative but on Saturday morning, the 18-year-old left practice after only ten minutes. Defenceman PK Subban moved to forward and skated in Della Rovere's place on the fourth line with Patrice Cormier and Evander Kane.

Head coach Pat Quinn said Della Rovere has a soft tissue injury (brusing) where the top of his skate sits against his leg and is day-to-day. If Della Rovere can't play, Subban will play forward against Kazakhstan on Sunday.

Della Rovere plays for the Barrie Colts of the OHL and was drafted in the 7th round (204th overall) of the 2008 NHL Entry Draft.

Canada lost Prince George Cougars forward Dana Tyrell to a knee injury during the team's pre-tournament victory over Sweden. They replaced Tyrell with Vancouver Giants forward Kane.

Quinn announced that Chet Pickard would get the start against Kazakhstan. Pickard, plays for the Tri-City Americans of the WHL and was named CHL Goaltender of the Year for the 2007/08 season. He was selected by the Nashville Predators in the 1st round (18th overall) of the 2008 NHL Entry Draft.

The lines during Saturday's practice were as follows:

Esposito - Tavares - DiDomenico
Boychuk - Hodgson - Eberle
Benn - Sonne - Ennis
Kane - Cormier - Della Rovere/Subban

Hickey - Teubert
Myers - Aulie
Subban - Goloubef
Ellis - Pietrangelo

Canada's next game comes against Kazakhstan on Sunday and can be seen live on TSN, TSN HD and at 3pm et/Noon pt.
