The Calgary Flames may be a part of the Winter Classic in 2010.

The National Hockey League and Calgary Flames are in discussions that would see the Flames host the second of two outdoor games on New Year's Day.

The competition committee will discuss the merits of a second game next Thursday during a meeting in Montreal and must provide a thumbs up for things to move forward.

The game would be played at McMahon Stadium, the home of the Stampeders, with ESPN The Magazine reporting the possible opponent being another Canadian team.

The first game is expected to be played at Fenway Park in Boston with speculation the Bruins would host 2008-09 Hart Trophy winner Alex Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals.

The Edmonton Oilers hosted the first outdoor game in 2003 when they played the Montreal Canadiens in the Heritage Classic at Commonwealth Stadium.

In 2008, Ralph Wilson Stadium in Buffalo was the stage for the first Winter Classic between the Sabres and Pittsburgh Penguins.

This past season, the Chicago Blackhawks hosted the Detroit Red Wings at Wrigley Field.
