Former Montreal Canadiens coach Guy Carbonneau has been asked to coach Canada's Under-18 team this year.

While Carbonneau hasn't accepted the job yet, a decision will be made next week.

Carbonneau originally replaced general manager and interim coach Bob Gainey as head coach of the Canadiens in 2006. He spent part of the season prior to that as an associate coach with the Habs and was hired to Gainey's staff with the intention that he would become head coach for the 2006-07 season.

Carbonneau's coaching record with Montreal was 124-83-23.

Montreal missed the playoffs in his first season, and were eliminated in five games by the Philadelphia Flyers in the second round of the 2008 playoffs.

He was relieved of his duties last March.
