MADISON, Wis. (AP) - Detroit Red Wings' draft pick Brendan Smith has been charged with disorderly conduct after a fight outside a Madison home earlier this month.
Prosecutors say the former Wisconsin Badger repeatedly punched a man who tried to get into a house party May 6.
The Wisconsin State Journal says Smith was charged Friday. The Mimico, Ontario native is scheduled to make an initial court appearance Tuesday.
The 21-year-old defenseman signed a three-year entry level contract with Detroit on Thursday after the Red Wings made him their first-round draft pick and 27th overall in the 2007 draft.
A telephone number for Smith couldn't immediately be found Saturday. Online court records didn't list a defense attorney.
Smith led the nation in defense scoring in the 2009-10 season with 15 goals and 52 points.
