It appears as though the Philadelphia Flyers have locked up some goaltending depth as CSNPhilly is reporting the Flyers have signed Johan Backlund to a two-year contract extension.
The 28-year old Swede spent the majority of the season with Adirondack of the AHL, but played in one regular season game for the Flyers. He also saw one minute of action during the Flyers playoff run, briefly relieving starter Brian Boucher in Game 3 of the Eastern Conference semifinal encounter with the Boston Bruins.
Flyers' general manager Paul Holmgren said that Backlund may require surgery on his left hip in the off-season to deal with a groin issue.
Backlund is expected to serve as the Flyers main backup next season. Who he will be backing up remains to be seen as both Michael Leighton and Ray Emery are set to become unrestricted free agents on July 1st.
