The Anaheim Ducks have signed defenceman Andy Sutton to a two-year contract worth US$4.25 million.

The 35-year-old Sutton appeared in 72 games with the New York Islanders and Ottawa last season, collecting five goals and eight assists with 107 penalty minutes. He finished the regular season ranked second among all NHL players with 204 blocked shots and eighth among defencemen with 197 hits.

"I'm definitely playing the best hockey of my career," said Sutton. "The mixture of experience and being in great shape has let me grow into a more poised player."

A native of Kingston, Ontario, Sutton began the 2009-10 season with the Islanders before being acquired by the Senators in exchange for a second-round selection in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft. In 54 games with the Islanders, Sutton ranked first among team defencemen in penalties, second in time-on-ice and tied for second in goals with four.

Sutton has played 12 NHL seasons with the Sharks, Wild, Thrashers, Islanders and Senators.
