VANCOUVER -- The 2015 Canada Winter Games have been awarded to Prince George, B.C, which beat out two other provincial contenders, Kelowna and Kamloops.

The announcement was made Friday in Vancouver under the 2010 Olympic torch which was specially lit for the occasion.

Canada Games Council chair Tom Quinn calls B.C.'s' sport infrastructure impressive and says B.C.'s beauty will provide the perfect backdrop for a sensational Games.

Premier Gordon Campbell congratulated Prince George on its selection, saying the event is an important stepping stone in athletes' training, pointing out former Canada Games competitors won 16 of Canada's medals at the Vancouver Olympics.

The Canada Games are held once every two years, alternating between winter and summer events.

The next Games are the winter version and will be held in Halifax starting Feb. 11.
