Toronto Maple Leafs captain Dion Phaneuf will miss approximately four to six weeks of action after suffering what the team calls "a significant leg laceration" on Tuesday against Ottawa.
The team said on Wednesday that Phaneuf has undergone successful surgery to repair the damage done when the defenceman got tangled with the Senators' Peter Regin midway through the second period.
In Phaneuf's place, the team has recalled defenceman Korbinian Holzer from the AHL's Toronto Marlies. He will report to the team for Wednesday's game in Washington against the Capitals, and will be a game-time decision for head coach Ron Wilson.
The 25-year-old Phaneuf has four assists in 11 games this season with a minus-6. He was named captain of the Maple Leafs over the summer.
