Detroit, MI (Sports Network) - Detroit Red Wings goaltender Chris Osgood will miss the next 6-to-8 weeks because of a groin injury, causing the club to recall Joey MacDonald from Grand Rapids of the American Hockey League.
Osgood missed time earlier this season because of the same injury and hasn't played since January 4 against Edmonton.
Osgood has made 10 starts between the pipes this season and compiled a 5-3-2 record with a 2.77 goals-against average and .903 save percentage. He notched his 400th career win against the Avalanche on December 27.
MacDonald will serve as Jimmy Howard's backup until Osgood returns. The 30- year-old veteran come on in relief, posting seven saves on eight shots in a 5-1 loss to Atlanta on November 24 and stopped 15-of-16 shots in Detroit's 5-4 loss to Colorado on Monday.
To clear spot on the roster for MacDonald, the team placed forward Pavel Datsyuk, who has missed the past nine games with a broken bone in his hand, on short-term injured reserve.
