The Russian rookie scored the eventual winner and added three assists to lead the Sarnia Sting over the Barrie Colts 4-3 on Thursday in the Ontario Hockey League.
Yakupov, who leads all rookies with 42 goals and 86 points this season, tied Steven Stamkos's franchise record for goals by a first-year player.
Stamkos, currently with the Tampa Lightning, leads the NHL with 41 goals and entered Thursday second in scoring with 77 points.
Alex Galchenyuk, with two, and Tyler Peters had the other goals for the Sting (22-29-6), who saw their seven-game road losing streak snapped.
Elsewhere in the OHL, it was: Windsor Spitfires 4, Ottawa 67's 1; Niagara IceDogs 6, Erie Otters 3; London Knights 4, Saginaw Spirit 2; and Belleville Bulls 5, Peterborough Petes 2.
At Barrie, Ont., Steven Beyers, Tanner Pearson and Dylan Smoskowitz countered for the Colts (12-42-4), who has now lost six of their last seven contests.
Troy Passingham made 29 saves for Sarnia, while Clint Windsor stopped the same number of shots at the other end.
Sarnia took advantage of Barrie's league-worst penalty kill. The Sting finished the game 2-for-8 on the power play, while the Colts finished 0-for-6.

At Windsor, Ont., Stephen Johnston scored twice and Jake Carrick had the game winner as the Windsor Spitfires defeated Ottawa.

At St. Catharines, Ont., Mark Visentin stopped 37 shots to backstop Niagara IceDogs over Erie.
