Speculation regarding the possibility of the Atlanta Thrashers moving to Winnipeg for next season is picking up.

As reported by Hockey Insider Darren Dreger on Monday, Winnipeg-based group True North has been in ongoing discussions with Atlanta Spirit Group - the parent company of the Thrashers - on a potential sale.

As of Sunday night, sources have refuted the various claims on social media that the two sides have any Memorandum of Understanding or have agreed to a period of exclusivity to get a deal done.

True North, headed up by Winnipeg businessman Mark Chipman and billionaire David Thomson, owns the MTS Centre in Winnipeg and the Manitoba Moose of the American Hockey League.

The focus on taking care of the Thrashers' ownership situation picked up last week after the City of Glendale voted last week to pay the NHL $25 million to offset losses for staying in Arizona for next season. Winnipeg was a frontrunner to land the Coyotes if they were unable to work out a deal to stay in Glendale.
