The University of Ottawa named former Toronto Argonauts head coach and Saskatchewan Roughriders defensive co-ordinator Gary Etcheverry as its next head coach on Wednesday.

"I am absolutely thrilled with the opportunity," said Etcheverry. "I am looking forward to making all the people who have supported me proud based on the results we are able to achieve, and to making some great alumni with the players that are here."

The Gee-Gees have been looking for a head coach since J.P. Asselin resigned last month to go to Carleton as offensive coordinator with the upstart Ravens, who are set to begin play in 2013.

Etcheverry, who worked in Ottawa during 2004 season when he was defensive co-ordinator for Ottawa Renegades, has previous CIS experience as a UBC assistant in 2005.

"We are very pleased to have hired someone of Gary's experience and expertise," said Luc Gélineau, Director of Sports Services. "He is a well-respected and creative coach who will maximize the tremendous talent of our student-athletes."
