The pressure has never been greater on Canada's divers in the lead-up to the London 2012 Olympic Games.

Over 50 competitors will gather in Montreal for the Canadian Olympic Trials this weekend, but a maximum of six will emerge with their Olympic hopes intact.

"You can feel the pressure in the pool. It's almost like you can cut the tension with a knife," said Scott Cranham, high performance director at Diving Canada Plongeon, in a conference call on Thursday.

"At an Olympic Games, if you've had the experience at a world championship or at a world cup, it will be very similar to that, but an Olympic trials is an Olympic trials, and there's so much riding on it."

While some sports appoint their Olympic team based on the results of one event to simulate the stress of an Olympic competition, Diving Canada Plongeon prefers that its divers prove their mettle in a series of events.
