CAPE TOWN, South Africa -- New Springboks coach Heyneke Meyer picked nine uncapped players on Saturday in his squad for the three-test series against England, and left out veteran scrumhalf Fourie du Preez and flanker Heinrich Brussow.

Meyer sprung surprises with the selection of flankers Marcell Coetzee and Jacques Potgieter, young Bulls centre JJ Engelbrecht and Lions lock Franco van der Merwe.

But Du Preez and Brussow, who were key members of the South Africa squad at last year's World Cup, missed out. Meyer also delayed naming a new captain, which many expected to be Du Preez, until next week. Ulster scrumhalf Ruan Pienaar made the squad, as did centre Frans Steyn.

South Africa plays England in the opening test in Durban next Saturday.
