The Winnipeg Free Press reports that restricted free agent forward Evander Kane and the Jets are in discussions on a contract that could lock him in for up to six years.

According to Free Press writer and TSN Radio 1290 host Gary Lawless, both sides are negotiating at a 'methodical pace' and want to have the deal - using Phil Kessel and John Tavares's contracts as comparables - finalized before the start of training camp.

Tavares signed a six-year deal with the New York Islanders last summer worth $33 million and Kessel is in the midst of a five-year, $27 million contract.

Kane, 20, had 30 goals and 27 assists last season.
