One day after winning a silver medal at the London 2012 Aquatics Centre, Canadian Summer Mortimer set a new world record and won the gold medal in the women's 50 metre freestyle final.

Mortimer had a strong start to take and maintain a narrow lead all the way to the wall with the first touch, setting a time of 28.10 seconds.

Australian Sophie Pascoe took silver just back of Mortimer, while French swimmer Elodie Lorandi won the bronze, dropping back from Pascoe in the second half.

Mortimer's teammate Aurelie Rivard finished sixth.

Canadian Brianna Nelson finished second in the women's 50m butterfly swim in a time of 36.03 seconds at the London 2012 Paralympic Games.

Nelson was among the top three right from the start and secured a second place position by the 25m mark.

Jacqueline Freney was dominant to finish in 35.16 to win the gold medal. Min Huang won bronze in a time of 36.50.

Canadian Sarah Mehain finished eighth.

On Day One, Canadians Benoit Huot and Mortimer won gold and silver respectively.
