ANTIGONISH, N.S. -- Guelph Gryphons centre Britt Benn was named the Canadian university women's rugby player of the year Wednesday.

The fifth-year centre from Napanee, Ont., led the OUA in scoring with 80 points on 16 tries, helping Guelph to a 6-0 record in the regular season and three straight playoff wins on the way to a fifth straight conference title.

Guelph has made a habit of winning the women's rugby MVP trophy, with Benn following Jacey Murphy (2010, 2011), Barbara Mervin (2005) and Lauren Smithson (2001) in taking top honours.

In other awards handed out at the All-Canadian banquet Wednesday, Concordia's Bianca Farella was named rookie of the year, Marin McLeod of Queen's took the award for student-athlete community service, and St. Francis Xavier's Mike Cavanagh won coach of the year.

Guelph, Acadia, St. FX, Queen's, Alberta and Concordia will battle for the CIS women's rugby championship, which starts Thursday.
