Svindal wins season's first World Cup downhill; Guay sixth

LAKE LOUISE, Alta. -- Aksel Lund Svindal of Norway won the season-opening World Cup men's downhill at Lake Louise, while Canadian Erik Guay finished sixth.

Svindal's time on the Olympic course was one minute 48.31 seconds.

Austria's Max Franz was second in 1:48.95.

His teammate Klaus Kroell and Marco Sullivan of the U.S., tied for third with identical times of 1:48.97.

Guay, from Mont-Tremblant, Que., posted a time of 1:49.48.

The men's super-G race is Sunday.

Svindal won that race last year and is looking to make it two in a row.
