Higgs whips Laycock in Draw 2 at Canadian Open of Curling

KELOWNA, B.C. -- Jake Higgs needed only four ends to complete a 10-3 blowout win over Steve Laycock on Thursday at the Canadian Open of Curling.

Higgs, from Harriston, Ont., scored four in the opening end and added six more points in the fourth end.

In other Draw 2 games, Brent Pierce of New Westminster, B.C., doubled Rob Fowler of Brandon, Man., 8-4 and defending champion Mike McEwen of Winnipeg defeated Toronto's Mark Kean 6-3.

Brad Gushue of St. John's, N.L., edged Jim Cotter of Kelowna, B.C., 5-4 and Rob Rumfeldt of Guelph, Ont., shaded Jean-Michel Menard of Quebec City 5-4.

Glenn Howard of Coldwater, Ont., and Jeff Stoughton of Winnipeg both opened with victories Wednesday night. They are scheduled to meet later Thursday.

The tournament is the second men's Grand Slam event of the World Curling Tour season and has a purse of $100,000.
