TORONTO - Toronto FC moved to shore up its backline Friday, taking former Chivas USA defender Danny Califf with the first overall pick in the MLS re-entry draft.

The 32-year-old Califf started in MLS in 2000, spending time with Los Angeles, San Jose, Philadelphia and Chivas. He played in Europe from 2005 to 2010.

Friday's draft marked the second stage of the league's re-entry process.

The defending champion Los Angeles Galaxy took midfielder Colin Clarke of Houston after moving up to second in the draft in a trade with Chivas.

Colorado took former Toronto FC midfielder Eric Avila while Montreal passed.

The Vancouver Whitecaps selected former Real Salt Lake forward Paulo Junior.
