Tim Tebow is heading back to the state where he became a college football legend.

According to ESPN's Chris Mortensen, it is a "virtual certainty" the New York Jets backup quarterback will find himself playing with the Jacksonville Jaguars next season.

Quoting league sources, Mortensen says Tebow will be traded or released after the season, with it being more probable that the Jets will honour the 25-year-olds request to be released.

The Jaguars were interested in Tebow last off-season, but were already committed to 2011 first-round pick Blaine Gabbert and could not promise the former University of Florida QB playing time.

However, after Gabbert again battled injuries and inconsistency in his second season, the Jaguars will have an open quarterback competition in 2013, with Mortensen reporting a team source told him there is a "high likelihood" Tebow will be part of the mix next year.
