Take note ladies and gentlemen. TSN Radio 1290's Jordan Cieciwa and TSN.ca's James Lynch are going head to head in this edition of the Takedown, as they make their precitions for this weekend's UFC on FUEL TV 7.
We want to hear what you think, #TeamLynch or #TeamJC.
It's our first shootout and we see the cage games going like this.
Michael McDonald vs. Renan Barao
Lynch: While I think the 22 year old McDonald has a chance, I see the interim champion taking this fight in a unanimous decision. For “Mayday” I see this fight similar to Rory MacDonald vs. Carlos Condit at UFC 115 in Vancouver, where like MacDonald, he'll show signs of greatness, but ultimately lose based off his opponent being a more explosive, seasoned veteran.
Barao via Unanimous Decision
JC: Well we agree on the outcome, but not the way it happens. Barao has a wealth of experience that McDonald won't be able to handle. Watch for early pressure, and an end of the first round submission from Barao.
Barao via 1st round Submission (Kimura or Armbar)
Cub Swanson vs. Dustin Poirier
Lynch: Aside from the main event, this easily could be fight of the night and will certainly bring some clarity to the featherweight division. Swanson has been on a roll, finishing his last three fights and has seemed to put his losses against Ricardo Lamas, Chad Mendes and Jose Also in the rear view mirror. Poirier meanwhile bounced back from a tough defeat to the hands of Chan Sung Jung, by taking out TUF 12 winner Jonathan Brookins in the first round. This will be a very competitive fight, but see the Jackson-Winklejohn student Swanson having his hand raised in the end.
Swanson via 3rd round Submission
JC: I agree with this being a fight of the night, and not one to miss. Title shots are on the horizon here. However, I always bet on the gritty fighter. Poirier is the tougher athlete here. He has the skill, and is working hard on developing his entire game. His speed is outstanding, and when he makes a mistake his chin pays the bill. Poirier takes this one.
Poirier via Unanimous Decision
Jimi Manuwa vs. Cyrille Diabate
Lynch: This is a classic passing of the guard matchup as the former K1 fighter Diabate faces off with the undefeated Brit. Both fighters will likely engage in a standup affair and I see the 32-year old Manuwa getting the better of the exchanges and go for knockout somewhere in the second round.
Manuwa via 2nd round Knockout
JC: Lynch is wrong. Diabate is going to shock the world, bring this to the ground and demonstrate his underrated jujitsu. The takedown will be set up with some very classic Thai boxing in the middle of the first round. The surprise factor will make sure he hits the takedown and finishes. I have sparred with Cyrille, he kicks really, really hard. Manuwa will respect the “old guard's” power and get caught.
Diabate via 1st round Submission (Armbar)
James Te-Huna vs. Ryan Jimmo
Lynch: I see a lot of pundits picking the Aussie Te-Huna, but I like the former MFC Light Heavyweight champion Jimmo in this fight. Neither light heavyweight will be afraid to trade punches but I think Jimmo will be able to grind out a decision and survive whatever onslaught his opponent throws at him.
Jimmo via Unanimous Decision
JC: Lynch is right, this will be a punch up. However, Lynch was wrong it won't be Jimmo. The heartbreak in this for the fans is that there won't be a “Robot” dance. Te-Huna is 4-1 in the UFC. Jimmo has one flash knockout. Going with experience on this one.
Te-Huna via 2nd round Technical Knockout
Che Mills vs. Matthew Riddle
Lynch: I think Mills will be able to keep this fight standing and avoid the submission game from the TUF season 7 veteran. Either way fans can expect an exciting fight as both competitors will be eager to make a statement and move up the ladder in the welterweight division.
Mills via Unanimous Decision
JC: Anyone see anything other than Mills winning? I like this matchup as we have a solid ground game to add a little bit of a side story. All Mills has to do is stay out of a jujitsu match. With his striking, I don't see that being a problem. I expect a solid punch to land in the third round.
Mills via 3rd round Technical Knockout
JC: Terry Etim will beat Renee Forte… Paul Sass gets a hometown submission over Alpha Male wrestler Danny Castillo… Stanislav Nedkov gets a Knockout win, and the respect he deserves over Tom Watson at light heavyweight.
