Impact sign defensive midfielder Warner to contract extension

MONTREAL -- Midfielder Collen Warner has signed a contract extension with the Montreal Impact, the Major League Soccer club announced Thursday.

Neither the length nor the financial details of the deal were announced.

Warner, 24, had career highs of 29 games played, 27 starts, 2,431 minutes played and 32 shots last season. He was used mostly as a defensive midfielder.

The Denver native was selected from Real Salt Lake in the expansion draft in November, 2011.

"He adapted well to the city, the culture and this organization," sporting director Nick De Santis said in a statement. "He was an important piece of our roster last year and played a vital role. We feel that he can be a key player for our team again this year and in the future."

The Impact open the regular season Saturday night against the Sounders in Seattle.
