Canadian Parisien wins fifth stage of Volta a Catalunya

LLEIDA, Spain -- Canadian cyclist Francois Parisien won Friday's fifth stage of the Volta a Catalunya, while Daniel Martin of Ireland extended his overall lead.

Parisien, riding for team Argos, pushed ahead on the final sprint to claim the 156.5-kilometre (97-mile) leg from Rialp to Lleida in 3 hours, 32 minutes, two seconds.

Martin increased the gap over second-place Joaquin Rodriguez to 14 seconds, with Nairo Quintana in third, 42 seconds back.

Tour de France winner Bradley Wiggins is in fourth place at 46 seconds off Martin's pace.

Riders face a 178.7-kilometre (111-mile) ride from Almacelles to Valls on Saturday, before the weeklong race ends in Barcelona the following day.
