The Edmonton Oilers have signed defenceman Ladislav Smid to a four-year contract extension, worth $14 million.

The 27-year-old Czech defender has registered one goal and two assists in 34 games with the Oilers this season. His new deal does not include a no-trade or no-movement clause.

Smid was in the final year of a two-year deal he signed with the Oilers prior to the 2011-12 season, and was set to become an unrestricted free agent in the off-season.

Smid was originally selected ninth overall by the Anaheim Ducks at the 2004 NHL Entry Draft and was sent to Edmonton as part of the package that sent defenceman Chris Pronger to the Ducks in 2006.
