Discussions on the National Hockey League's participation at the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi will continue Friday.

Representatives from the NHL, NHL Players' Association, the International Olympic Committee and the International Ice Hockey Federation will meet in New York to try and find progress on participation next winter, but no announcement or decision is expected to happen on Friday.

The groups held discussions last month, when NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly and league brass visited the host site of the Games.

"It must be said that many challenges remain and that this is more than just an IIHF-NHL issue," IIHF president Rene Fasel said following the March visit.

The NHL still needs to make a final decision on whether it will send its players to Sochi and any agreement for Olympic participation would need the NHLPA's approval.

NHL players have taken part in the Winter Olympics since Nagano in 1998, but with the 2014 Games less than a year away an agreement still has to be finalized.

The 2014 Olympic Winter Games run from Feb. 7 to Feb. 23.
