After 16 hard-fought, entertaining match-ups, Round Two of TSN.ca's 2013 Play of the Year Showdown kicks off today with two very strong contenders.
Evgeni Malkin took his first round match-up against fellow Russian Alex Ovechkin with ease, capturing 77.49 per cent of the votes while Eric Fehr easily defeated Matt Duchene, finishing with 77.87 per cent of the votes to advance.
Malkin's POY nomination happens as the forward blocks a pass attempt in the neutral zone and picks up the puck on the fly near Tampa Bay's blue line. What happens next is certainly one of the best goals of the year, and hardly unexpected given Malkin's talent level.
Fehr's 2013 POY entry encompasses strength, determination and a little razzle-dazzle. The big forward skates the puck across the Boston Bruins' blue line, uses some quick stick work to split the defencemen and rips the shot, while falling, past Rask to end the game in overtime.
