If the Colorado Avalanche keep the first overall pick in the NHL Draft, they are leaning towards taking a forward over defenceman Seth Jones.

According to a report in the Denver Post, Avalanche executive vice-president Joe Sakic said the team will pass on Jones with the first-overall pick.

"If we do pick first, we're leaning more toward one of those three forwards,"Sakic told the Denver Post.

The three forwards he was referring to were Halifax Mooseheads teammates Nathan MacKinnon and Jonathan Drouin, and Finnish centre Aleksander Barkov.

"We feel those three forwards are just too good to pass up," Sakic continued.

The thought was that Colorado would take Jones to help fill their need on the blue line, especially considering they are already strong at centre.

MacKinnon passed Jones as the top ranked prospect in the ISS Rankings for June while Jones remains the top North American skater in the NHL's Central Scouting Service Rankings.
