Horton, Blue Jackets agree to seven-year, $37.1M contract

The Columbus Blue Jackets have agreed to terms with unrestricted free agent forward Nathan Horton on a seven-year contract, $37.1 million deal.

The deal has an average annual value of $5.3 million per season.

The 28-year-old Welland, Ont. native spent the last three seasons of his nine-year NHL career with the Boston Bruins. In 2012-13, Horton scored 13 goals and nine assists in 43 games. He also added eight goals and 17 points in 22 playoff games helping the Bruins reach the Stanley Cup Final.

For his career, Horton has appeared in 591 NHL games, tallying 198 goals and 402 points. He was drafted third overall by the Florida Panthers and spent the first six years of his career with the team. He was traded to Boston in 2010 and won the Stanley Cup in his first season with the Bruins.

Horton earned $5.5 million in 2012-13, the last year of a six-year deal that carried a cap hit of $4 million.
