QUEENS COUNTY, P.E.I. -- RCMP have released the identity of the man killed in a crash on Saturday during the finale of a pro stock car race on Prince Edward Island.

RCMP say Robert Michael Stevens -- a 30-year-old resident of Riverview, N.B. -- was taking part in a 100-lap competition hosted at the Oyster Bed Speedway race track, about 15 kilometres north of Charlottetown.

Police say Stevens's car flipped onto its roof during the 98th lap.

The Mounties say the driver began removing his own safety equipment while suspended upside down after the crash, but the effort somehow strangled him, leading to his death.

Police say reasonable safety protocols were followed during the race.
