The Edmonton Eskimos will be without middle linebacker JC Sherritt for the foreseeable future.

The team said on Tuesday that Sherritt sustained a broken thumb on his left hand during a game on Aug. 2 and has already had surgery to correct it.

Sherritt will be out indefinitely.

The 25-year-old import has 37 tackles and one sack this season. Last year he won the CFL's Most Outstanding Defensive Player award.

The Eskimos return to action this Sunday when they play in Toronto against the Argonauts.
