Blackhawks sign D Hjalmarsson to five-year, $20.5M extension

The Chicago Blackhawks announced Wednesday that they have agreed to terms with defenceman Niklas Hjalmarsson on a five-year contract extension.

TSN Hockey Insider Pierre LeBrun reports that the deal is worth an average of $4.1 million per season.
 
Hjalmarsson, 26, had five assists and a postseason career-best plus-10 plus/minus rating in 23 playoff games en route to helping the Blackhawks win the Stanley Cup in June.

The Eksjo, Sweden, native tallied 10 points with a career-high plus-15 rating in 46 regular season games lasr season.

Originally drafted by Chicago in the fourth round (108th overall) of the 2005 NHL Entry Draft, Hjalmarsson, a member of the 2010 and 2013 Stanley Cup Championship teams, has recorded 56 points and a plus-48 rating in 306 career regular season games, while adding 17 points in 75 playoff games.
