Talks on a contract extension between the Edmonton Oilers and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins have begun.
According to TSN Edmonton reporter Ryan Rishaug, agent Rick Valette met with Oilers senior VP of hockey operations Scott Howson and general manager Craig MacTavish on Monday to kick off the talks.
Nugent-Hopkins, 20, is beginning the final season of his three-year entry-level contract with the Oilers. If he is not re-signed prior to next summer, he is eligible to become a restricted free agent.
The first overall pick from the 2011 NHL Draft had four goals and 20 assists in 40 games in Edmonton last season. In 102 games over his first two seasons, Nugent-Hopkins has 22 goals and 54 assists.
