San Jose Sharks forward Joe Thornton drew plenty of attention after some racy comments he made in the dressing room were made public on Thursday, but the 16-year NHL veteran took the higher road when asked about it after his team's 4-1 win over the Vancouver Canucks later in the evening.
The Sharks' captain made an offhand and off-colour remark regarding how he would have celebrated if he had a four-goal game like rookie linemate Tomas Hertl. The Vancouver Province posted the quotes in their entirety and it took off immediately on Twitter and Deadspin.
"No, that's okay," Thornton replied with a slight smile after being asked if he was upset. "Thanks for asking."
Prior to the game, the Sharks released a statement defending Thornton and criticizing the newspaper for using the quote.
"I don't think it would be a surprise to anyone in the industry that 'locker room talk' exists," read the statement.
"Professional reporters understand that concept and respect it. This is a pathetic attempt to generate some page hits and controversy by reporting an off-the-cuff and off-the-record comment made by someone who wasn't even being interviewed at the time."
