Buffalo Sabres forward Patrick Kaleta will be appealing his 10-game suspension from the NHL.

After conferring with his agent and the NHL Players' Association, Kaleta will appeal the decision brought on by his illegal check to the head of Columbus Blue Jackets defenceman Jack Johnson.

According to TSN Hockey Insider Bob McKenzie, the first appeal will be heard by NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman and if he upholds the ruling, the new CBA allows for a second appeal to a neutral arbitrator.

If the suspension is upheld, Kaleta, a repeat offender, will forfeit $152,439 in salary.

The 27-year-old has already served two games of his suspension awaiting an in-person hearing.

He was not penalized for his hit and Johnson was not injured on the play.
